The Trinity: One God in Three Persons

Understanding the unified nature of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one God in three distinct persons

5 Bible References

Introduction

The doctrine of the Trinity teaches that there is one God who exists eternally in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. Each person is fully God, yet there is only one God. This is one of the most profound and central truths of the Christian faith.

Core Truth:

"One God, Three Persons, Equal in Glory, Distinct in Role"

Biblical Foundation

1 One God

Deuteronomy 6:4

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one."

The Shema - Judaism's fundamental declaration of God's unity

Isaiah 45:5

"I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God."

God's absolute uniqueness and sovereignty

1 Corinthians 8:6

"Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live."

Paul affirms monotheism while acknowledging both Father and Son

2 Three Distinct Persons

Matthew 3:16-17 - Jesus's Baptism

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'"

The Son: Jesus in the water being baptized

The Spirit: Descending like a dove

The Father: Speaking from heaven

Matthew 28:19 - The Great Commission

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Jesus commands baptism in the singular "name" (not "names") of all three persons

2 Corinthians 13:14 - The Benediction

"May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."

Paul's blessing invokes all three persons equally

Key Characteristics of the Trinity

Co-Equal

Each person is fully God with all divine attributes - omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, holiness, love, and eternity.

Co-Eternal

All three persons have existed forever. There was never a time when any of them did not exist.

Co-Essential

They share the same divine nature and essence. All are equally and fully God.

Distinct Persons

Each has unique roles and relationships. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father.

Understanding Through Illustrations

Note: All analogies are imperfect, but they can help us grasp this profound mystery.

Water

Water can exist in three forms: ice, liquid, and steam. Same substance (H₂O), different states. All three forms are equally water.

Limitation: Water cannot be all three forms simultaneously at the same place.

The Sun

The sun has three aspects: the sun itself, light, and heat. Three manifestations, one source. You cannot have one without the others.

Limitation: Light and heat are not distinct persons, just properties.

Triangle

Three sides, one shape. Each side is distinct but essential. Remove one side and you no longer have a triangle.

Limitation: The sides are not persons with relationships.

Love Relationship

Love requires a lover, beloved, and the love between them. God's nature as love (1 John 4:8) exists eternally in perfect relationship within the Trinity.

Best analogy: Captures the relational aspect of the Trinity.

Why the Trinity Matters

Practical Applications

Worship

We worship one God in three persons. Our worship is directed to the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit.

Prayer

We can pray to the Father in Jesus's name by the Spirit's power, confident in the unity and love within the Godhead.

Salvation

All three persons work in our redemption: the Father planned it, the Son accomplished it, the Spirit applies it to our lives.

Community

The Trinity models perfect love, unity, and relationship. This reflects God's design for the Church and human relationships.

Understanding Scripture

The Trinity helps us understand passages that might otherwise seem contradictory, showing how one God can be present everywhere while also walking on earth.

"The Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them."
