God the Son: Jesus Christ Our Savior

Understanding Jesus Christ as the second person of the Trinity - fully God and fully man

6 Bible References

Who is God the Son?

Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity, the eternal Son of God who became man to save humanity from sin. He is fully God and fully man - two complete natures united in one person. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus accomplished redemption and opened the way for us to have relationship with God the Father.

Core Identity:

"The Word Made Flesh, Savior of the World, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords"

The Incarnation: God Became Man

John 1:14

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

This is the miracle of the Incarnation - God entered human history as a man, born of the Virgin Mary, to live among us and die for us.

Fully God

Eternal Existence

"Before Abraham was born, I am!" (John 8:58)

Creator of All

"Through him all things were made" (John 1:3)

Worshiped as God

Fully Man

Born of a Woman

"Born of a woman, born under law" (Galatians 4:4)

"After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry" (Matthew 4:2)

Felt Emotions

The Hypostatic Union

This theological term describes the union of Christ's two natures - divine and human - in one person. He did not cease to be God when He became man, nor is He half-God and half-man. He is fully both, perfectly and mysteriously united.

The Mission of Jesus Christ

1

To Reveal the Father

John 14:9

"Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father."

Jesus came to show us what God is like. Through His words, actions, and character, we see the heart of the Father.

2

To Provide Salvation

Luke 19:10

"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."

Jesus's primary mission was redemption. He came to die as a substitute for sinners, bearing the punishment we deserved.

To Defeat Sin and Death

1 Corinthians 15:57

Through His resurrection, Jesus demonstrated His power over sin, death, and Satan. He has won the ultimate victory.

4

To Reconcile Us to God

2 Corinthians 5:18-19

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ... God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them."

Sin had separated us from God. Jesus's work on the cross removes the barrier and restores relationship between God and humanity.

The Threefold Office of Christ

In Scripture, Jesus fulfills three major roles that were traditionally held by different people in Israel:

Prophet

Jesus speaks God's Word to humanity

  • Teaches truth about God
  • Reveals God's will
  • Proclaims the Kingdom

Deuteronomy 18:15, John 1:18

Priest

Jesus represents us before God

  • Offers Himself as sacrifice
  • Mediates between God and man
  • Intercedes for believers

Hebrews 4:14-16, 7:25

King

Jesus rules and reigns forever

  • Reigns over all creation
  • Protects His people
  • Will return to judge

Matthew 28:18, Revelation 19:16

The Resurrection: Victory Over Death

1 Corinthians 15:20-22

"But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."

The resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith. It proves Jesus's victory over sin and death and guarantees our own future resurrection.

What the Resurrection Proves

  • Jesus is truly God (Romans 1:4)
  • His sacrifice was accepted (Hebrews 9:12)
  • Death is defeated (1 Corinthians 15:54-55)
  • We will be raised too (1 Thessalonians 4:14)

Where is Jesus Now?

  • Ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9)
  • Seated at Father's right hand (Hebrews 1:3)
  • Interceding for us (Romans 8:34)
  • Will return in glory (Acts 1:11)

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

— Colossians 1:15-17
