God the Holy Spirit: The Helper and Comforter

Discovering the person and work of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers

6 Bible References

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, fully God and equal with the Father and the Son. He is not merely a force or influence, but a divine person with intellect, emotions, and will. The Holy Spirit actively works in the world today, convicting people of sin, regenerating believers, dwelling within us, and empowering us for service and godly living.

Core Identity:

"The Helper, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, and Seal of Our Salvation"

The Holy Spirit is a Person, Not a Force

John 14:16-17

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."

Notice Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as "him" and "another advocate" - indicating personhood and equality with Jesus Himself.

He Has a Mind

The Spirit thinks and knows:

"The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God" (1 Corinthians 2:10)

He Has Emotions

The Spirit feels and cares:

"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God" (Ephesians 4:30)

He Has a Will

The Spirit chooses and decides:

"All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines" (1 Corinthians 12:11)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

Convicts of Sin

The Spirit reveals our need for salvation and brings awareness of sin, righteousness, and judgment.

John 16:8

"When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment"

Regenerates (Gives New Birth)

The Spirit brings us from spiritual death to spiritual life. This is the miracle of being "born again."

John 3:5-6

"No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit."

Indwells Believers

Every believer has the Holy Spirit living within them from the moment of salvation.

1 Corinthians 6:19

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?"

Seals and Guarantees

The Spirit is God's mark of ownership on us and the guarantee of our eternal inheritance.

Ephesians 1:13-14

"Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance"

Guides and Teaches

The Spirit illuminates Scripture, reveals truth, and guides believers in wisdom and decision-making.

John 16:13

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth"

Empowers for Service

The Spirit gives power for witness, ministry, and living the Christian life effectively.

Acts 1:8

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses"

Intercedes in Prayer

When we don't know how to pray, the Spirit prays for us with groans too deep for words.

Romans 8:26-27

"The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us"

Produces Fruit

The Spirit transforms our character to reflect Christ, producing spiritual fruit in our lives.

Galatians 5:22-23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control"

Biblical Symbols of the Holy Spirit

Scripture uses various symbols to help us understand the Holy Spirit's nature and work:

Dove

Represents gentleness, purity, and peace

Matthew 3:16

Fire

Represents purification, power, and presence

Acts 2:3-4

Wind

Represents power, sovereignty, and mystery

John 3:8, Acts 2:2

Water

Represents cleansing, refreshing, and life-giving

John 7:38-39

Oil

Represents anointing, consecration, and healing

1 John 2:20, 27

The Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

These nine characteristics are the supernatural result of the Spirit's work in a believer's life. They are evidence of spiritual maturity and Christ-likeness.

Love

Unconditional, sacrificial affection for God and others (1 Corinthians 13)

Joy

Deep gladness rooted in God's promises, not dependent on circumstances

Peace

Inner tranquility and wholeness that comes from trusting God completely

Patience

Endurance under difficult circumstances; long-suffering with others

Kindness

Active goodwill and tender concern expressed in helpful actions

Goodness

Moral excellence and integrity; doing what is right in God's eyes

Faithfulness

Reliability, loyalty, and steadfastness in following through on commitments

Gentleness

Meekness; power under control; humble strength in dealing with others

Self-Control

Mastery over desires and impulses; discipline in thoughts and actions

Notice: It's Fruit, Not Fruits

Galatians 5:22 uses the singular "fruit," not "fruits." This suggests these characteristics are a unified package—all nine should increasingly be present in every Spirit-filled believer's life, not just a few we pick and choose.

The Gifts of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work."

The Holy Spirit sovereignly distributes spiritual gifts to believers for the purpose of building up the church and advancing God's kingdom.

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."

This is a command, not a suggestion. Being filled with the Spirit is God's will for every believer. It's not a one-time experience but a continuous lifestyle of surrendering to the Spirit's control.

How to Be Filled

1

Confess and Repent of Sin

Sin grieves the Spirit and hinders His work (Ephesians 4:30)

2

Surrender Control

Yield every area of life to God's authority (Romans 12:1)

3

Ask by Faith

God promises to fill those who ask (Luke 11:13)

4

Walk in Obedience

Continue following the Spirit's leading daily (Galatians 5:16, 25)

Evidence of Being Filled

Growing Christ-likeness and spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23)
Power to witness boldly (Acts 4:31)
Deep love for God's Word (Psalm 119:97)
Joyful worship and thanksgiving (Ephesians 5:19-20)
Victory over sinful patterns (Romans 8:13)
Effective use of spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7-11)
Unity and love with other believers (Ephesians 4:3)

Don't Grieve or Quench the Spirit

Don't Grieve the Spirit

Ephesians 4:30

"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

We grieve (sadden) the Spirit through sin, especially:

  • Bitterness, rage, and anger
  • Harsh words and slander
  • Malice toward others
  • Unforgiveness

Don't Quench the Spirit

1 Thessalonians 5:19

"Do not quench the Spirit."

We quench (put out the fire of) the Spirit by:

  • Ignoring His promptings
  • Resisting His conviction
  • Refusing to use spiritual gifts
  • Stifling His work in our lives

"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

— John 14:26-27

The Holy Spirit is not a distant force but God Himself living within you. He is your Helper, Teacher, Comforter, and Guide. Surrender to His control daily and watch Him transform your life from the inside out.
