The Foundation of Biblical Law

The Ten Commandments were given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai and form the foundation of biblical moral law. They are divided into two categories: our relationship with God (1-4) and our relationship with others (5-10).

The Ten Commandments

1. You shall have no other gods before Me

Put God first in all things

2. You shall not make idols

Worship God alone, not created things

3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain

Treat God's name with reverence

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy

Set aside time to worship and rest

5. Honor your father and your mother

Respect and care for your parents

6. You shall not murder

Preserve human life

7. You shall not commit adultery

Honor marriage and sexual purity

8. You shall not steal

9. You shall not bear false witness

Tell the truth

The Two Great Commandments

When asked which commandment is the greatest, Jesus summarized all the commandments into two:
