Miracles of Jesus

Explore the miraculous works of Jesus Christ recorded in the Gospels.

The Miracles of Jesus Christ

The four Gospels record approximately 37 specific miracles performed by Jesus, plus numerous general references to mass healings. These miracles served multiple purposes: they demonstrated Jesus's divine authority, authenticated His messianic claims, revealed God's compassion for suffering humanity, and foreshadowed the coming Kingdom of God where all sickness, death, and chaos will be eliminated.

The Purpose of Miracles:

Signs of His deity: "Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves" (John 14:11)
Compassion for suffering: "When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them" (Matthew 9:36)
Fulfillment of prophecy: "He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases" (Matthew 8:17, quoting Isaiah 53:4)

Healing Miracles (23)

Physical restoration demonstrating Jesus's authority over disease and disability

1 Healing of Peter's Mother-in-Law

Capernaum | Early Ministry

Matthew 8:14-15; Mark 1:29-31; Luke 4:38-39

"When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him."

Significance: Immediate, complete healing. She was restored to full strength instantly, able to serve. This was one of Jesus's first recorded healing miracles.

2 Cleansing of a Leper

Galilee Region

Matthew 8:2-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16

"A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, 'Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.' Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. 'I am willing,' he said. 'Be clean!' Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy."

Significance: Jesus touched the leper—something no one did due to ritual impurity. Leprosy was incurable and resulted in social isolation. This miracle demonstrated Jesus's power over the "incurable" and His compassion for the outcast.

3 Healing of the Paralytic Lowered Through the Roof

Capernaum

Matthew 9:2-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26

"Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on."

"When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven... I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.' He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all."

Significance: Jesus first forgave sins (claiming divine authority), then healed physically to prove His authority to forgive. The physical healing was the visible proof of the invisible spiritual healing.

4 Healing at the Pool of Bethesda

Jerusalem | Invalid for 38 Years

John 5:1-15

"One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, 'Do you want to get well?' ... Then Jesus said to him, 'Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.' At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked."

Significance: Jesus healed on the Sabbath, sparking controversy. The 38-year duration emphasized the impossibility of natural recovery. No faith is recorded on the man's part—Jesus healed sovereignly.

5 Healing of the Man with a Withered Hand

Synagogue | Sabbath Controversy

Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11

"He said to the man with the shriveled hand, 'Stand up in front of everyone.' Then Jesus asked them, 'Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?' ... He said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored."

Significance: Another Sabbath healing, challenging legalistic interpretations. The Pharisees began plotting to kill Jesus after this miracle (Mark 3:6).

6 Healing of the Centurion's Servant

Capernaum | Long-Distance Healing

Matthew 8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10

"The centurion replied, 'Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, Go, and he goes; and that one, Come, and he comes.' When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, 'Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.'"

Significance: Healing from a distance. Jesus commended the Gentile centurion's faith as greater than any He'd found in Israel. The servant was healed "at that very hour."

7 Healing of the Woman with Issue of Blood

On the Way to Jairus's House | 12 Years of Suffering

Matthew 9:20-22; Mark 5:25-34; Luke 8:43-48

"A woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, 'If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.' Jesus turned and saw her. 'Take heart, daughter,' he said, 'your faith has healed you.' And the woman was healed at that moment."

Significance: She was ritually unclean and had spent all her money on physicians (Mark 5:26). Her faith led her to reach out, and power went out from Jesus. He publicly acknowledged her to restore her dignity.

8 Healing of Two Blind Men

Capernaum

Matthew 9:27-31

"Two blind men followed him, calling out, 'Have mercy on us, Son of David!' ... Jesus said to them, 'Do you believe that I am able to do this?' 'Yes, Lord,' they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, 'According to your faith let it be done to you'; and their sight was restored."

Significance: They called Him "Son of David"—a messianic title. Jesus tested their faith before healing them.

9 Healing of a Mute Man Possessed by a Demon

Galilee

Matthew 9:32-34

"While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, 'Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.'"

Significance: The muteness was caused by demon possession. When Jesus cast out the demon, speech was immediately restored.

10 Healing of the Canaanite Woman's Daughter

Region of Tyre and Sidon | Gentile Healing

Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30

"A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, 'Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.' ... Then Jesus said to her, 'Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.' And her daughter was healed at that moment."

Significance: Jesus initially seemed to refuse (testing her faith), but the woman's persistent faith prevailed. Another long-distance healing of a Gentile.

11 Healing of the Deaf Man with Speech Impediment

Decapolis Region

Mark 7:31-37

"There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue... At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly."

Significance: Unique method—Jesus used physical touch and actions. The healing fulfilled Isaiah 35:5-6: "Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped."

12 Healing of the Blind Man at Bethsaida

Bethsaida | Gradual Healing

Mark 8:22-26

"He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, 'Do you see anything?' He looked up and said, 'I see people; they look like trees walking around.' Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly."

Significance: The only gradual healing recorded—possibly teaching that spiritual sight also comes progressively (Peter's confession follows immediately in Mark 8:27-30).

13 Healing of the Boy with Seizures (Epileptic)

After the Transfiguration

Matthew 17:14-20; Mark 9:14-29; Luke 9:37-43

"A man in the crowd answered, 'Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground.' ... Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment."

Significance: The disciples had failed to cast out this demon. Jesus explained: "This kind can come out only by prayer" (Mark 9:29). Demonstrated the need for faith and spiritual discipline.

14 Healing of the Ten Lepers

Border of Samaria and Galilee | Only One Returned

Luke 17:11-19

"As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, 'Jesus, Master, have pity on us!' When he saw them, he said, 'Go, show yourselves to the priests.' And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice... Jesus asked, 'Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?'"

Significance: Healed as they went in obedience. Only the Samaritan (a despised outsider) returned to give thanks. Jesus commended his faith and gratitude.

Additional Healing Miracles:

15. Healing of the Crippled Woman (18 years)

Luke 13:10-17

Bent over, could not straighten. Healed on Sabbath in synagogue.

16. Healing of Man with Dropsy

Luke 14:1-6

Another Sabbath healing, challenging Pharisees' legalism.

17. Healing of Blind Bartimaeus

Matthew 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52; Luke 18:35-43

"Son of David, have mercy on me!" Persistent faith rewarded.

18. Healing of Man Born Blind

John 9:1-41

Mud and spit applied, washed in Pool of Siloam. Major controversy followed.

19. Healing of Malchus's Ear

Luke 22:49-51; John 18:10-11

Peter cut off servant's ear in Gethsemane; Jesus reattached it.

20. Healing of the Official's Son

John 4:46-54

Second sign in Cana. Healed from distance at Capernaum.

21. Healing of Two Blind Men near Jericho

Matthew 20:29-34

Parallel account to Bartimaeus; Matthew mentions two blind men.

22. Healing of the Blind and Mute Demoniac

Matthew 12:22-23; Luke 11:14

Demon cast out, both sight and speech restored.

23. Healing of the Synagogue Ruler's Servant

Luke 7:1-10

Centurion's great faith; healing from distance.

Nature Miracles (9)

Authority over creation: water, wind, fish, and trees

1 Turning Water into Wine

Cana, Galilee | First Sign

John 2:1-11

"Jesus said to the servants, 'Fill the jars with water'; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, 'Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.' They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine... What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory."

Significance: First miracle. Demonstrated creative power—transforming one substance into another. Approximately 120-180 gallons of wine. Symbolized the new covenant replacing the old (water of purification → wine of joy).

2 Calming the Storm

Sea of Galilee | "Peace, Be Still"

Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25

"A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?' He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'"

Significance: Demonstrated authority over nature. The disciples' question—"Who is this?"— points to deity, as only God controls the weather (Psalm 89:9; 107:29).

3 Feeding of the 5,000

Near Bethsaida | Only Miracle in All Four Gospels

Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-14

"Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand."

Significance: The only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. Fed 5,000 men plus women and children (possibly 15,000-20,000 total). Demonstrated Jesus as the Bread of Life (John 6:35). Twelve baskets left over—one for each disciple who doubted provision.

4 Walking on Water

Sea of Galilee | Fourth Watch of the Night

Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-52; John 6:16-21

"Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. 'It's a ghost,' they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: 'Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.'"

"'Lord, if it's you,' Peter replied, 'tell me to come to you on the water.' 'Come,' he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord, save me!' Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him."

Significance: Defied natural laws. The phrase "It is I" (Greek: ego eimi) echoes God's name revealed to Moses (Exodus 3:14). Peter's walking then sinking illustrates faith and doubt.

5 Feeding of the 4,000

Decapolis Region | Second Mass Feeding

Matthew 15:32-39; Mark 8:1-10

"Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 'I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.' ... He took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children."

Significance: Similar to feeding the 5,000 but in Gentile territory. Seven baskets (symbolic number of completion) left over. Demonstrated God's provision extends beyond Israel.

Additional Nature Miracles:

6. First Miraculous Catch of Fish

Luke 5:1-11

After fishing all night with nothing, nets nearly broke with the catch at Jesus's word. Led to Peter, James, and John following Jesus.

7. Second Miraculous Catch of Fish

John 21:1-14

After resurrection, 153 large fish caught when disciples obeyed Jesus's instruction. Net did not break.

8. Coin in the Fish's Mouth

Matthew 17:24-27

Temple tax needed. Jesus told Peter to catch a fish—first one would have a coin in its mouth. Demonstrated God's miraculous provision.

9. Cursing the Fig Tree

Matthew 21:18-22; Mark 11:12-14, 20-25

Fig tree with leaves but no fruit. Jesus cursed it; by next day it was withered from roots. Object lesson on fruitless religion and faith's power.

Exorcisms (6)

Authority over the spiritual realm and demonic forces

1 Demoniac in the Capernaum Synagogue

Capernaum | First Recorded Exorcism

Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37

"Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!' 'Be quiet!' said Jesus sternly. 'Come out of him!' The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek."

Significance: Demons recognized Jesus's identity. His authority over evil spirits amazed the people: "He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him" (Mark 1:27).

2 The Gerasene/Gadarene Demoniac

Region of the Gerasenes | Legion of Demons

Matthew 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8:26-39

"When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain... Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones."

"Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' 'My name is Legion,' he replied, 'for we are many.' ... He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned."

Significance: Most severe demon possession recorded. The man was supernaturally strong, self-destructive, and living among tombs. "Legion" (Roman military unit of 6,000) indicated thousands of demons. After deliverance, he was "dressed and in his right mind" (Mark 5:15).

3 The Syrophoenician Woman's Daughter

Tyre and Sidon | Long-Distance Exorcism

Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30

"A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, 'Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.' ... 'Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.' And her daughter was healed at that moment."

Significance: Gentile woman's persistent faith. Jesus initially seemed reluctant but her humility and faith prevailed. Demon cast out from a distance.

Additional Exorcisms:

4. Mute Man Possessed

Matthew 9:32-34

Demon caused muteness. When cast out, man spoke immediately.

5. Blind and Mute Demoniac

Matthew 12:22-23; Luke 11:14

Both sight and speech restored when demon expelled. Pharisees accused Jesus of using Satan's power.

6. Boy with Seizures/Epilepsy

Matthew 17:14-20; Mark 9:14-29

Disciples failed to cast it out. Jesus: "This kind comes out only by prayer and fasting."

Raising the Dead (3)

Ultimate authority over death itself

1 Jairus's Daughter

Capernaum | Age 12

Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56

"A synagogue leader named Jairus came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, pleading earnestly with him, 'My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.' ... While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. 'Your daughter is dead,' they said. 'Why bother the teacher anymore?'"

"He went in and said to them, 'Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.' But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, 'Talitha koum!' (which means 'Little girl, I say to you, get up!'). Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around."

Significance: First recorded resurrection. Jesus described death as "sleep," showing His perspective on death's temporary nature for believers. The girl's immediate restoration to health—she walked and Jesus instructed them to feed her—showed complete healing.

2 The Widow of Nain's Son

Nain | Compassion for a Widow

Luke 7:11-17

"As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, 'Don't cry.'"

"Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, 'Young man, I say to you, get up!' The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother."

Significance: Jesus initiated this miracle—no one asked Him. His compassion for the widow (who would have no support without her son) motivated Him. The people responded: "A great prophet has appeared among us... God has come to help his people" (Luke 7:16).

3 Lazarus of Bethany

Bethany | Dead Four Days | Greatest Resurrection

John 11:1-44

"Jesus said, 'Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?' So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, 'Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.'"

"When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!' The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, 'Take off the grave clothes and let him go.'"

Significance: The greatest resurrection miracle before Jesus's own. Lazarus had been dead four days—beyond any possibility of natural resuscitation. Martha warned, "by this time there is a bad odor" (John 11:39). This miracle caused many to believe, but also led to the final plot to kill Jesus (John 11:45-53).

Jesus's Declaration:

"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26)

This statement is one of the seven "I AM" declarations in John's Gospel, asserting Jesus's deity and power over death.

Mass Healings & General References

Summary statements indicating countless additional miracles

Important Note:

The Gospels record 37 specific miracles, but they also contain numerous summary statements indicating Jesus performed many more miracles than those individually described. These general references suggest Jesus performed hundreds or thousands of healing miracles during His ministry.

John 21:25

"Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."

Matthew's Summary Statements

Matthew 4:23-24

"Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them."

Matthew 8:16

"When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick."

Matthew 15:30-31

"Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing."

Mark & Luke's Summary Statements

Mark 1:32-34

"That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons."

Mark 3:10

"For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him."

Mark 6:53-56

"When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed."

Luke 4:40

"At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them."

Luke 6:17-19

"A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. What the Miracles Reveal About Jesus

His Divine Authority

  • Authority over disease, disability, and death
  • Authority over nature (water, wind, food)
  • Authority over the spiritual realm (demons)
  • Authority to forgive sins (divine prerogative)

His Compassionate Character

  • Compassion for the suffering and marginalized
  • Touched the "untouchable" (lepers, dead bodies)
  • Healed Jews and Gentiles alike
  • Broke social barriers to bring healing

"Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." (Matthew 9:35-36)

The miracles were not merely displays of power—they were acts of love revealing God's heart for broken humanity. They point to a future Kingdom where "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away" (Revelation 21:4).
