Living by Faith
Discover what faith is, why it matters, and how to live by faith every day—featuring the great heroes of faith from Hebrews 11.
Living by Faith: A Guide for New Believers
Faith is the foundation of the Christian life. Everything in your relationship with God begins and continues through faith. You were saved by faith, and now you're called to live by faith every single day. But what does that actually mean? How do you live by faith in a world you can see when God is invisible? This guide will help you understand what faith is, why it's essential, and how to apply it to every area of your life.
The Essence of Faith:
"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith isn't blind—it's trusting in God's character and promises even when you can't see the outcome.

What is Faith?
Understanding the foundation of Christianity
The Biblical Definition
Hebrews 11:1
"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
This verse gives us two key aspects of faith:
- • Confidence in what we hope for - Faith trusts God's promises about the future
- • Assurance about what we do not see - Faith believes in spiritual realities we can't physically see
What Faith IS:
- • Trust in God's character
- • Confidence in God's promises
- • Reliance on God's power
- • Obedience to God's Word
- • Assurance of things unseen
What Faith is NOT:
- • Blind optimism without reason
- • Wishful thinking or make-believe
- • Ignoring reality or facts
- • Works to earn God's favor
- • A feeling that comes and goes
Simple Illustrations of Faith
🪑 The Chair Illustration
When you sit in a chair, you trust it will hold you—even though you can't see its internal structure. You demonstrate faith by putting your full weight on it. Similarly, faith in God means putting your full trust in Him, even when you can't see how He's working.
✈️ The Airplane Illustration
When you board an airplane, you trust the pilot and the aircraft's ability to fly—even though you don't understand aerodynamics. You act on that trust by getting on the plane. Faith in God is similar: you may not understand everything, but you trust Him and act accordingly.
🌱 The Seed Illustration
A farmer plants a seed in the ground with confidence it will grow, even though he can't see what's happening underground. He waters it and waits, trusting the process. Faith works the same way—we trust God is working even when we can't see immediate results.
Faith vs. Sight
The Christian life is fundamentally about living by faith, not by sight. This is one of the core principles that separates believers from the world.
"For we live by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7)
"Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy." (1 Peter 1:8)
Living by Sight
Living by sight means only believing what you can physically see, touch, or prove. It relies on human understanding and circumstances. When things look bad, you despair. When things look good, you feel confident.
Living by Faith
Living by faith means trusting God's Word and character regardless of what circumstances look like. You believe God is working even when you can't see it. Your confidence is in Him, not in what your eyes tell you.
Why Faith is Essential in Christianity
The absolute necessity of faith
Without Faith, It's Impossible to Please God
Hebrews 11:6
"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
This verse makes it crystal clear: Faith is not optional. You cannot have a relationship with God without faith. It's the fundamental requirement.
Think about it: How can you have a relationship with someone you don't trust? How can you follow someone you don't believe in? Faith is the doorway to knowing God and the foundation of pleasing Him.
6 Reasons Why Faith is Essential
1 Faith is How We Are Saved
Salvation comes through faith alone, not by works. You cannot earn your way to heaven—only faith in Jesus saves you.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
2 Faith is How We Access God's Grace
Every blessing, every answer to prayer, every spiritual gift comes through faith. Faith is the channel through which God's grace flows.
"Through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand." (Romans 5:2)
3 Faith is How We Overcome the World
The world's system, Satan's lies, and life's trials are overcome through faith. Victory in the Christian life is always by faith.
"For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." (1 John 5:4)
4 Faith is How We Walk with God
The righteous person doesn't just start by faith—they continue living by faith every single day. It's an ongoing lifestyle.
"The righteous will live by faith." (Romans 1:17; Habakkuk 2:4)
5 Faith is What Pleases God
God is pleased when we trust Him. Every time you choose faith over fear, trust over doubt, you bring joy to God's heart.
"Without faith it is impossible to please God." (Hebrews 11:6)
6 Faith is How We Receive Miracles
Throughout the Bible, Jesus connected miracles with faith. "Your faith has healed you" was a common statement. Faith releases God's power.
"According to your faith let it be done to you." (Matthew 9:29)
Saving Faith: How Faith Brings Salvation
The faith that saves
Faith in the Gospel
Saving faith is specifically faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. It's not just believing that God exists—even demons believe that (James 2:19). Saving faith is trusting in Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
The Core of Saving Faith:
1. Jesus Died
For YOUR sins on the cross
(1 Corinthians 15:3)
2. Jesus Rose
From the dead on the third day
(1 Corinthians 15:4)
3. Jesus Saves
All who believe in Him
(John 3:16)
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved." (Romans 10:9-10)
Three Components of Genuine Saving Faith
Theologians have historically identified three elements of true saving faith:
1 Knowledge (Notitia)
Understanding the facts of the Gospel. You must know who Jesus is, what He did, and why it matters. You can't believe in something you've never heard.
"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?" (Romans 10:14)
2 Assent (Assensus)
Agreeing that the Gospel is true. It's not enough to know about Jesus—you must believe what the Bible says about Him is actually true. You intellectually affirm the truth of the Gospel.
"You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder." (James 2:19)
Note: Demons have knowledge and assent, but they lack the third element...
3 Trust (Fiducia)
Personal commitment and reliance on Jesus. This is where saving faith happens. You're not just acknowledging Jesus—you're putting your full weight on Him, trusting Him personally as YOUR Savior and Lord.
"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." (John 1:12)
This is the difference between knowing about a life preserver and actually grabbing onto it to be saved. Saving faith receives and rests upon Christ alone for salvation.
Salvation by Faith Alone
One of the most important truths in Christianity: You are saved by faith alone, not by works. This is called "justification by faith" and it's the heart of the Gospel.
What DOES Save You
- ✓ Faith in Jesus Christ
- ✓ Grace from God
- ✓ Jesus's work on the cross
- ✓ The blood of Christ
- ✓ God's mercy and love
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith." (Ephesians 2:8)
What Does NOT Save You
- ✗ Your good works or deeds
- ✗ Church attendance
- ✗ Baptism or communion
- ✗ Being a "good person"
- ✗ Religious rituals
"Not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:9)
Living Faith: Faith in Daily Life
How to apply faith practically
Faith That Works
Here's a crucial balance: While we're saved by faith alone, genuine faith always produces works. Faith and works aren't enemies—they're partners. You're not saved BY works, but you're saved FOR works.
James 2:17, 26
"Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead... As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."
Important: James isn't contradicting Paul (faith alone saves). He's saying that real, living faith will naturally produce good works. If someone claims to have faith but has no changed life, their "faith" isn't genuine.
Dead Faith
Says "I believe" but:
- • Lives unchanged
- • No fruit of the Spirit
- • No desire to obey God
- • No love for others
- • Just intellectual agreement
Living Faith
Says "I believe" and:
- • Life is being transformed
- • Produces good works
- • Obeys God's Word
- • Loves God and others
- • Active, working trust
7 Key Areas to Live by Faith
1 Faith in God's Provision
Trust that God will provide for your needs—food, clothing, shelter, finances. Don't live in anxiety about tomorrow; trust your heavenly Father.
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow." (Matthew 6:33-34)
"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)
2 Faith in God's Protection
Believe that God is your shield and protector. He watches over you and keeps you safe spiritually and physically according to His will.
"The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1)
3 Faith in God's Guidance
Trust that God will direct your steps and show you which way to go. Seek His wisdom for decisions great and small.
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)
4 Faith in God's Timing
Believe that God's timing is perfect, even when you're waiting. He's never early, never late—always right on time according to His perfect plan.
"But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day." (2 Peter 3:8)
"He has made everything beautiful in its time." (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
5 Faith in God's Promises
God has made thousands of promises in His Word. Living by faith means believing those promises and standing on them, even when circumstances say otherwise.
"For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ." (2 Corinthians 1:20)
6 Faith in Trials and Suffering
Trust that God is working for your good even in painful circumstances. He uses trials to strengthen your faith and character.
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." (James 1:2-3)
7 Faith in Prayer
Believe that God hears and answers prayer. Come boldly to His throne of grace, trusting He will respond according to His will.
"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)
"Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." (Mark 11:24)
The Faith Hall of Fame: Heroes of Hebrews 11
Great examples of faith from Scripture
Champions of Faith
Hebrews 11 is often called the "Faith Hall of Fame" or the "Heroes of Faith" chapter. It's a powerful collection of men and women who trusted God and did extraordinary things through faith. Each person demonstrates that faith isn't just believing in God—it's acting on that belief.
Notice the repeated pattern: "By faith..." Each hero's story begins with these two words. Their faith wasn't passive—it was active, obedient, and often costly. But God honored their faith!
Abel
Act of Faith: Offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did (Genesis 4:3-5)
The Impact: God commended him as righteous, and though dead, he still speaks to us today about acceptable worship.
"By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous." (Hebrews 11:4)
Enoch
Act of Faith: Walked faithfully with God for 300 years (Genesis 5:21-24)
The Impact: God took him to heaven without experiencing death! Only two people in the Bible were taken this way (Enoch and Elijah).
"By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death... he was commended as one who pleased God." (Hebrews 11:5)
Noah
Act of Faith: Built a massive ark when warned about a flood no one had ever seen (Genesis 6-9)
The Impact: Saved his entire family (8 people) and preserved humanity and animal life. He obeyed God even when it looked foolish to others.
"By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family." (Hebrews 11:7)
Abraham
Acts of Faith: Left his homeland not knowing where he was going; waited 25 years for God's promise of a son; was willing to sacrifice Isaac when God asked (Genesis 12-22)
The Impact: Became the "father of faith" and received God's covenant promises. Through his descendant (Jesus), all nations are blessed.
"By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going." (Hebrews 11:8)
Sarah
Act of Faith: Believed God would enable her to conceive a child despite being past childbearing age (90 years old!) (Genesis 18:9-15; 21:1-7)
The Impact: Gave birth to Isaac, the child of promise, proving that nothing is impossible with God.
"By faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise." (Hebrews 11:11)
Isaac
Act of Faith: Blessed Jacob and Esau with prophetic blessings concerning their future (Genesis 27:27-29, 39-40)
The Impact: Passed on God's covenant promises to the next generation, trusting God's plan would continue.
"By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future." (Hebrews 11:20)
Jacob
Act of Faith: Near death, blessed Joseph's two sons and worshiped God, leaning on his staff (Genesis 48)
The Impact: Demonstrated that faith persists to the very end of life. He trusted God's promises even in his final moments.
"By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff." (Hebrews 11:21)
Joseph
Act of Faith: As he was dying, spoke about the Exodus and gave instructions about his bones (Genesis 50:24-25)
The Impact: Believed God would fulfill His promise to bring Israel out of Egypt—and it happened 400 years later! His bones were indeed carried out during the Exodus.
"By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones." (Hebrews 11:22)
Moses
Acts of Faith: Refused Egypt's treasures to identify with God's people; kept the Passover; crossed the Red Sea; led Israel for 40 years (Exodus 2-40)
The Impact: Delivered an entire nation from slavery. Received the Law from God. Chose suffering with God's people over temporary pleasures of sin.
"By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin." (Hebrews 11:24-25)
Rahab
Act of Faith: A prostitute in Jericho who hid Israelite spies and helped them escape (Joshua 2; 6:22-25)
The Impact: She and her family were saved when Jericho fell. She married into Israel and became an ancestor of Jesus Christ! (Matthew 1:5)
"By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient." (Hebrews 11:31)
Gideon
Act of Faith: Led 300 men against a vast Midianite army (Judges 6-8)
The Impact: Delivered Israel from oppression, proving that God doesn't need numbers—He needs faith and obedience.
"The LORD said to Gideon, 'With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.'" (Judges 7:7)
Barak
Act of Faith: Led Israel's army against Sisera's chariots, trusting God's promise through Deborah (Judges 4-5)
The Impact: Defeated a technologically superior enemy and brought peace to Israel for 40 years.
Samson
Act of Faith: Despite his failures, trusted God one final time to give him strength against the Philistines (Judges 13-16)
The Impact: Killed more enemies in his death than in his life, showing that God can redeem and use even those who have failed Him.
David
Acts of Faith: Faced Goliath as a teenager; trusted God through battles, persecution, and kingship (1 Samuel 16 - 1 Kings 2)
The Impact: Became Israel's greatest king and a man after God's own heart. From his lineage came Jesus the Messiah.
"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty." (1 Samuel 17:45)
What They All Had in Common
They believed God's promises even when they couldn't see the fulfillment.
They obeyed God even when it was difficult, costly, or didn't make sense.
They looked beyond this life to eternal rewards.
They endured hardship because they trusted God's character and plans.
"These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect."
— Hebrews 11:39-40
Many of these heroes died without seeing the full fulfillment of God's promises. But they died in faith, and we now get to see what they longed for—Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of all God's promises!
How to Grow Your Faith
Practical ways to strengthen your trust in God
Faith Can Grow!
Good news: Faith isn't static! It can and should grow stronger over time. Just as a muscle grows through exercise, your faith grows through use and testing. Here's how to cultivate stronger faith in your life.
Read and Hear God's Word
This is THE primary way faith grows. You can't have faith in a God you don't know, and you get to know God through His Word.
"Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ."
— Romans 10:17
Action: Read your Bible daily, even if just a few verses. Listen to biblical teaching. Memorize key promises.
Go Through Trials
Trials aren't fun, but they're faith-builders. When you trust God through difficulty and see Him come through, your faith becomes stronger.
"These [trials] have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
— 1 Peter 1:7
Action: When trials come, see them as opportunities for faith to grow, not reasons to doubt.
Pray Boldly
Prayer exercises faith. When you ask God for things beyond your ability and see Him answer, your confidence in Him grows.
"If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."
— Matthew 21:22
Action: Keep a prayer journal. Write down requests and note when/how God answers.
Take Faith Steps
Faith grows when you act on it. Step out and do what God says, even when it's scary or doesn't make sense.
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
— James 1:22
Action: Start with small obedience (share your faith with a friend, give generously, forgive someone) and work up to bigger steps.
Fellowship with Believers
Your faith is strengthened when you're around other believers. Their testimonies, prayers, and encouragement build you up.
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together... but encouraging one another."
— Hebrews 10:24-25
Action: Join a church. Get in a small group. Find a mentor or accountability partner.
Remember Past Faithfulness
Looking back at how God has been faithful in the past strengthens your faith for the future. Create reminders of His goodness.
"I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago."
— Psalm 77:11
Action: Keep a "God moments" journal. Share testimonies. Celebrate answered prayers.
What About When You Doubt?
Let's be honest: Every believer experiences doubt sometimes. Even great heroes of faith had moments of uncertainty. The key is what you do with your doubt.
Honest Doubt
Questioning because you sincerely want to understand and believe.
Example: Thomas wanted proof before believing Jesus rose (John 20:25)—Jesus didn't condemn him, He provided evidence!
Stubborn Unbelief
Refusing to believe even when shown evidence.
Example: Pharaoh's hard heart—God showed many miracles but he wouldn't believe (Exodus 7-14).
God's Patience
God is patient with honest doubters and works with them.
Example: Gideon asked for multiple signs—God patiently provided them (Judges 6:36-40).
The Father's Honest Prayer: When Jesus told a man to have faith for his son's healing, the father responded with one of the most honest prayers in Scripture:
"I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"
— Mark 9:24
And Jesus honored that imperfect faith and healed his son! You can pray this prayer too.
How to Fight Doubt:
Be honest with God about your struggles—He already knows anyway
Speak truth to your doubt—remind yourself of what you know to be true
Remember past faithfulness—how God has come through before
Talk to mature believers who can encourage and pray for you
Keep reading Scripture—faith comes by hearing God's Word (Romans 10:17)
Take a faith step anyway—often courage comes after you start obeying, not before
Living by Faith Daily
Practical ways to apply faith every day
10 Daily Faith Practices
Faith isn't just a Sunday thing—it's meant to be lived out every single day. Here are practical ways to walk by faith in your everyday life:
1 Start Each Day with Faith Declarations
Before your feet hit the floor, declare who God is and what He's promised. Set the tone for your day.
Example: "This is the day the LORD has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24)
2 Pray About Everything
Big decisions and small ones—take them all to God in prayer. Live like you really believe He cares and is involved.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition... present your requests to God." (Philippians 4:6)
3 Speak God's Promises Over Situations
When facing fear, worry, or difficulty, verbally declare what God has promised instead of focusing on the problem.
Feeling anxious? Say "God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-discipline" (2 Timothy 1:7)
4 Give Generously
Trust God with your finances. Give to your church, support ministries, help those in need—and watch God provide for you.
"Give, and it will be given to you... For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (Luke 6:38)
5 Share Your Faith
Tell others what God has done for you. Trust that God will give you words and opportunities to share His love.
"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you..." (1 Peter 3:15)
6 Obey Promptings of the Holy Spirit
When you sense God nudging you to call someone, give to someone, or do something—act on it quickly.
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" (Isaiah 30:21)
7 Forgive Quickly
Trust God enough to let go of offenses. Forgive others because you've been forgiven—believing God will make things right.
"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance... Forgive as the Lord forgave you." (Colossians 3:13)
8 Worship in Hard Times
Choose to praise God even when circumstances are difficult. Faith says "I'll worship You anyway."
"Though the fig tree does not bud... yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior." (Habakkuk 3:17-18)
9 Wait Patiently for God's Timing
Don't rush ahead of God or try to force things. Trust His timing is perfect, even when you're eager for answers.
"Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD." (Psalm 27:14)
10 End Each Day with Thanksgiving
Before bed, thank God for how He showed up today. Gratitude fuels faith for tomorrow.
"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Your Faith Journey Starts Now
